Project type
Iconography
Date
May 2024
Location
Iowa City, IA
The SAAH Departmental Icons project was created for the University of Iowa's School of Art and Art History to represent the various disciplines within the department, including graphic design, art education, 3D design, intermedia, and more. The icons were designed with a minimalist approach, using only black-and-white linework to maintain a cohesive and professional aesthetic across all digital communications. Each icon uniquely incorporates hands in ways that reflect the specific practices of each discipline, symbolizing the hands-on nature of the creative work in the department.
To achieve accuracy and consistency, I used Adobe Illustrator to produce scalable vector designs, relying on self-made photo references for realistic hand poses. This vector-based approach allowed for crisp, infinitely scalable icons suitable for digital applications. The department was impressed with the cohesive style and simplicity of the icons, which effectively captured the essence of each program while enhancing the visual identity of SAAH communications.
